Scenario
A female patient visited Restore for post-surgery rehabilitation for a shoulder fracture, which placed her in a sling for six weeks. She experienced a significant loss of shoulder range of motion and strength, impacting her ability to perform everyday tasks.
This patient was a dedicated caregiver for her husband, who had ongoing health issues. She was also a devoted grandmother who regularly looked after her grandchildren during the week. On top of her caregiving responsibilities, she was a keen golfer.
Her primary goal was to return to driving so she could travel for medical appointments and school pickups. She also wanted to start golfing again.
Solution
We started treatment with hands-on mobilisation of the shoulder joint and soft tissue therapy to help relieve pain and stiffness. Our team also introduced a personalised home exercise program to gradually restore her mobility and function.
Around eight weeks post-surgery, she achieved her first significant milestone - returning to driving. With her immediate goal reached, the focus shifted toward rebuilding strength. Her rehab program was advanced to include shoulder strengthening exercises and functional movements tailored to her daily lifestyle.
As her strength and confidence improved, we started on her long-term goal: Golf. Over the following weeks, her treatment continued to evolve, with exercises targeting golf-specific movements and shoulder control.
Result
At five months post-surgery, she successfully returned to the driving range. By the six-month mark, she had played her first full round of golf since her injury, marking a significant personal achievement in doing an activity that she loved and regaining independence.
She has since resumed playing weekly and continues to maintain her strength and mobility through her tailored home program.
